Payslip or final tax?

In Stockholm your taxes and fees add up to 30.62%. Your employer doesn't withhold at that exact rate: Skatteverket rounds it to a whole number — 30.62% becomes tax table 31 — and every table counts 1.16% of its rate as burial and church fee, whatever yours are. That's why your payslip shows 7,900 kr in tax a month.

When the year is over, you file your tax return in the spring and Skatteverket works out your final tax at the exact rates: 7,659 kr a month. The difference between what was withheld and your final tax is paid back to you — or you pay what's missing.

This counts only the tax table's rounding. Deductions (mortgage interest, travel), other income, bonuses and changing jobs during the year also change the real amount.

Assumptions

  • Tax rules for 2026 (basic deduction, earned income tax credit, state tax, fees), from Skatteverket's technical description of the 2026 tax tables.
  • Municipal, regional, burial and church rates for 2026 for all 290 municipalities, from Skatteverket's open data (retrieved September 29, 2026). Tax is paid where you were registered on 1 November the year before.
  • Covers salary only, the same every month all year. Included: municipal and regional tax, state tax, burial fee, church fee (if a member), general pension contribution, public service fee and the tax credits for them.
  • State income tax is 20 % of taxable income above 643,000 kr a year.
  • “After final tax” is the year's actual tax. “On my payslip” is what employers withhold by Skatteverket's monthly tax table: your total rate rounded to a whole number (32.50 → 32, 32.51 → 33), with 1.16 % of it counted as burial and church fee; above 80,000 kr a month the table gives a whole percent. The estimated refund or back tax is the difference over the year.
  • Not included: other income (capital, pension, benefits), deductions (travel, interest, ROT/RUT) and taxable benefits. Age is assumed to be 18 or older.
  • Amounts in Swedish kronor. Each tax and fee is rounded down to whole kronor as Skatteverket does; monthly amounts are the year's divided by 12.

This is an estimate for information only, not tax or financial advice. Your final tax is decided by Skatteverket — check it in your income tax return or with Skatteverket's own calculator.
