How much tax will you get back?

Estimate your tax refund for 2026 step by step: salary, mortgage and car loan interest, and rot, rut and green technology — with Skatteverket's rules.

How the interest deduction works

You get back 30 % of the year's interest up to 100 000 kr, and 21 % of the interest above that. Your employer withholds tax without it, so it comes back when Skatteverket settles the year after your tax return.

Example: 150 000 kr in interest gives 30 % × 100 000 kr + 21 % × 50 000 kr = 40 500 kr back.

The deduction can't be larger than your municipal and state income tax after your other tax credits. On a low income part of it can go unused — it isn't paid out and can't be saved for later.

Rot, rut and green technology work differently: the company takes them off the invoice. They use up the same tax as the interest deduction, and the interest deduction goes first — so with a large mortgage and a large renovation in the same year, your tax may not cover both, and you pay the difference back.

Want it every month instead of as a refund? You can ask Skatteverket for adjusted withholding (jämkning). Then your refund is smaller.

Counts

Mortgage interest, and interest on a car loan with the car as security.

Doesn't count

Private loans and every other loan without security — blancolån, credit cards, consumer credit. The deduction for them was halved in 2025 and is gone from 1 January 2026. Student loans from CSN never counted.

Assumptions

This is an estimate for information only, not tax or financial advice. Your refund is decided by Skatteverket — check your income tax return, where your bank reports the interest you paid.

  1. Interest deduction for 2026: 30 % of interest up to 100 000 kr a year, 21 % above it, taken off municipal and state income tax after the other tax credits. What doesn't fit is lost.
  2. Only mortgages and car loans with the car as security count. Interest on private loans (loans without security) gives no deduction from 1 January 2026.
  3. Each loan keeps today's balance and rate: the mortgage amortizes the same amount every month, the car loan is an annuity. The year's interest is the first months of that schedule — as many as you had the loan in 2026.
  4. Rot (30 % of labour), rut (50 % of labour) and green technology (15 % for solar panels, 50 % for batteries and charging points) for 2026 are taken off the invoice. They come after the interest deduction; what your tax can't cover is paid back. Caps per person and year: rot 50 000 kr, rot and rut together 75 000 kr, green technology 50 000 kr.
  5. Tax on your salary and what your employer withholds as in our salary-after-tax calculator: 2026 rules, your municipality's rates and the monthly tax table.
  6. Not included: capital income (interest, dividends, gains) that reduces the deduction, adjusted withholding (jämkning) — with it your refund is smaller — property fee, other deductions and other income.
  7. Amounts in Swedish kronor, rounded down to whole kronor.

How it works

How your tax refund is calculated

Your tax refund is the difference between the tax withheld during the year and your final tax. The calculator adds up three parts, step by step.

1. The tax table’s rounding

Your employer withholds tax using a tax table that rounds your municipality’s tax rate to a whole number. The final tax uses the exact rates, so your salary alone often gives a small refund or back tax.

2. The interest deduction

Interest on mortgages and car loans gives a tax reduction: 30 % of the interest up to 100 000 kr a year, and 21 % of the part above that. It reduces your municipal and state income tax after the other tax reductions, and whatever doesn’t fit within your tax is lost.

Only loans with security count. From the 2026 tax year, interest on personal loans and other unsecured loans gives no deduction at all.

3. Rot, rut and green technology

The rut deduction is 50 % and the rot deduction 30 % of the labour cost – rot at most 50 000 kr, and rot and rut together at most 75 000 kr per person and year. For green technology it’s 15 % for solar panels and 50 % for battery storage and charging points, at most 50 000 kr per person and year.

These deductions are already taken off the invoice, so they never add to your refund. But they have to fit within the tax left after the interest deduction. With large interest costs and a large renovation in the same year, you may have to pay some of it back – step 4 shows how much.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

When is the tax refund paid out?

The refund for 2026 is paid out in 2027. If you file digitally early and don't change anything, it usually arrives in April; otherwise in June or later. Back tax is usually due by 12 November the year after the tax year.

Does interest on a personal loan give a deduction?

No. From the 2026 tax year, interest on loans without security – personal loans, blanco loans, credit cards and other consumer credit – gives no tax reduction. Mortgages and loans with security, such as a car loan with the car as security, still count.

How large can the interest deduction be?

30 % of your interest up to 100 000 kr a year, and 21 % of the interest above that. It can never be larger than your municipal and state income tax after the other tax reductions; whatever doesn't fit is lost.

Why can a rot deduction lead to back tax?

Rot, rut and green technology are taken off the invoice, but they have to fit within your tax for the year – and the interest deduction is counted first. If there isn't enough tax left after it, you pay the difference back.

Does the calculator account for a preliminary tax adjustment (jämkning)?

No. If you have adjusted your withholding for your interest costs, your refund will be smaller than the calculator shows. Capital income such as interest and dividends isn't included either.
